Mahindra Defence Systems (MDS) on Tuesday (March 17) inaugurated its first Special Military vehicles (SMV) facility in Faridabad near New Delhi. “The SMV will manufacture specialised vehicles for the armed forces, paramilitary forces and the police and is also designed to undertake vehicle development, armouring and conversions,” Mahindra Group Vice Chairman and Managing Director Anand Mahindra told a press conference at the plant site. The SMV plant will be developed in two phases.
“In first phase, we have invested Rs 25 crore and developed shop floor of 40,000 square feet for building bullet-proof, riot control, armoured vehicles and armoured tourist buses,” MDS Chief Executive Brigadier (retd) Khutub Hai said.
“In the second phase, we will develop another 40,000 square feet and build the high mobility vehicle ‘AXE’ high-mobility vehicles and mine-protection vehicles that we are developing in collaboration with BAE Systems from South Africa. For the second leg, we will invest Rs 15 crore,” he added. Hai said that the plant has the capacity to roll-out 500 armoured vehicles every year and would be able to produce upto 750 similar vehicles in times of “emergency”.
