Musharraf on first trip abroad after quitting

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 3:11 am

Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Sunday (Nov 23) night arrived here on a week-long private visit to the UK, his first trip abroad since he resigned in August.

Musharraf, who reached here in a regular PIA flight from Islamabad, accompanied by wife Begum Sehba Musharraf, was received by the Deputy High Commissioner of Pakistan. He is expected to address Cambridge University Students Union and different think tanks.

Musharraf had last visited Britain in January on his way home from an official tour of four European countries. He stepped down as President on August 18 to avoid impeachment by the PPP-led government. Since then, he has maintained a low profile.

During meetings with leaders of the opposition PML-Q which backed him during his rule of nearly nine years, Musharraf has reportedly said he has no plans to re-enter politics. Musharraf’s aides have said he has received several offers to deliver lectures abroad.

Musharraf resigned as President in August and was replaced by Asif Ali Zardari, widower of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
