My film will not be remake of ‘Chashmebaddur’: Onir

Monday, November 17, 2008 at 3:11 am

Twenty-seven years after Sai Paranjpe made ‘Miss Chamko’ a household name with ‘Chashmebaddur’, director Onir is all set to recreate the magic of the classic but with entirely new interpretations.

“When I was approached for the film, I had only one condition, it will not be a copy of the original film. I have taken only the concept and have interpreted it in my own way,” Onir said.

The director of films like ‘My Brother Nikhil’ and ‘Bas Ek Pal’ says he is against remake of classics.
“There is every reason people should watch the original film. I loved it and this is why I agreed to work on it but it will never be a remake. It is a different film built on the same concept,” he justifies.

After dealing with serious films, Onir’s latest film is a refreshing comedy, which is a “complex story with a lighter twist”. ‘Sorry Bhai’, releasing on November 28, deals with a ‘Catch-22′ like situation. What happens when you fall in love with the fiancee of your brother?

“When I first read the draft of the story I could not stop laughing. The situation in the film is very complex but full of humour,” he says. Onir, who started his career with serious films like ‘My Brother Nikhil’ and ‘Bas Ek Pal’ wanted to try something different.

“It is important for my growth as a director to try out different genres. This film deals with a very bold subject, I have tried to deal with it in the gentlest way possible. Actually, it is a lighter approach to a serious issue,” he says.

The film is centred around the story of a family, who are gathered to participate in the marriage of their elder son but the twist comes in the form of the younger brother who declares his love for his brother’s bride to be.

Veterans like Shabana Azmi and Boman Irani play prominent roles in film besides Sharman Joshi, Sanjay Suri and Chitrangda Singh, who is making her comeback to the tinseltown.

The director says he likes to explore themes which deal with humans in immposible situations. This is why Onir plans to make a film on Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. Being a literature student, Shakespeare has always appealed him. “I am fascinated by it,” he admits.

“What I like about his plays is their eternal quality. They cross the boundaries of time and culture and fit into different situations. I wanted to explore and reinterpret the theme of ‘to be or not to be’.”

Talking about the other literary works that he would like to work upon, Onir says, “I would love to translate Amitav Ghosh’s ‘Hungry Tide’ into cinema. Works of contemporary Indian writers like Jhumpa Lahiri can be turned into good films,” he says. However, he has no desire to make something of a period film.

The director, who has struggled to chart out his way in the film industry, says he will never compromise on the quality of his films. “For me start was difficult because as a director I wanted to make my kind of films. I did not wanted to end up doing something which was being done by everyone. But I have no complaints,” he says.
