New IGI terminal to be functional by March

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 5:02 am

A new domestic departure terminal of Indira Gandhi International airport, with upgraded and new passenger facilities, will become fully operational by March-end, cited the airport officials on Tuesday (February 24).

“The new departure terminal, christened Terminal 1D(T1D), will be inaugurated on February 26 by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel. But it will take few more weeks to make it fully operational,” said an official from the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which is operating the airport.

The new terminal, with an area of 3,50,000 square feet, is located between the existing Terminal 1A and the Terminal 1C – the new and upgraded domestic arrival terminal – of the airport. Once the new terminal becomes functional, all the domestic airlines, currently operating from existing terminals 1A and 1B, will be shifted to the new building.

However, some of the airlines are not very enthusiastic about the move. According to these airlines, they will once again need to shift to the new integrated terminal building (termed as T3), which would come up by next year before the Commonwealth Games.

The new terminal (T1D) would have better and enhanced passenger facilities like eight entry gates, 72 check-in counters as opposed to 32 in the existing terminals, 16 security channels against the existing four and ultra-modern in-line baggage screening system in the place of manual screening system.
