New President To Face Cricket Challenges

KARACHI:Asif Zardari, Mushahid Hussain or Justice (Retd.) Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui, whoever wins the Presidential race on Saturday will also be burdened with the difficult task of trying to set things right in Pakistan cricket.
As by default, the President also holds the post of “Chief Patron” of the cricket board.
Former President Pervez Musharraf’s love for cricket was obvious – and he didn’t waste any opportunities to use the sport to promote his policies.
Musharraf was a regular visitor to matches. Unfortunately his tenure didn’t see Pakistan cricket scale any great heights with all his handpicked Chairmen, Lt General (retd.) Tauqir Zia, Shaharyar Khan and Nasim Ashraf failing to give Pakistan cricket a new look and life.
No wonder the cricket fraternity has its piece of advice for the new President.
Advice apart the President will need to quickly deal with the lack of discipline and disregard for contractual obligations by players.
To make the task more challenging for the President, he has to use diplomatic channels to convince and pressurize teams it is safe to tour Pakistan following the postponement of Australia’s tour and the Champions Trophy this year.
Cricket lovers and fans are clear about what they expect from the new chief patron.
Among the Presidential candidates, Asif Zardari has the closest links with cricket and sports. His love for polo is well documented even by his detractors.
