Newport folk festival 2009, Newport Folk Festival started off as a steadfast showcase of just that–traditional folk music. In the years since, Newport has become a groundbreaking mingling place for styles old and new. It’s the venue where Dylan went electric in 1965, and where the Pixies went acoustic 40 years later.
Heading up this year’s bill is Pete Seeger, a performer at the inaugural Folk Fest and perhaps the foremost face of traditional American folk music. The 90-year-old Seeger will close both days of this weekend’s festival.
Continuing in the tradition of recent past, the Folk Festival 50 lineup features indie rockers like the Decemberists, Fleet Foxes, Iron & Wine and Neko Case alongside many of the usual suspects: Seeger, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie and Gillian Welch. Also on tap is plenty of young acoustic-leaning talent, including the Avett Brothers, Elvis Perkins in Dearland and Rhode Island’s own Deer Tick and the Low Anthem.
