No sex or drugs, only rock’n'roll: Carla Bruni

Monday, December 29, 2008 at 5:12 am

Vowing to keep away from ‘sex’ and ‘drugs’, France’s most talked-about woman Carla Bruni is
portraying in a film her life with President Nicolas Sarkozy, her career as a supermodel and her passion for ‘rock’n'roll’.

“No more sex, no more drugs, only rock’n'roll!” the French First Lady was quoted as saying by ‘The Sunday Times’ which cited an exclusive preview of the 80-minute documentary ‘Somebody Told Me About Carla Bruni’.

In the film, Bruni relates how she told Sarkozy before they married that she had no intention of giving up her music career just because she was to become the President’s wife.

“I said to Nicolas, ‘I cannot choose between you and my music, it’s ridiculous. I’m not going to drop my job and iron my husband’s shirts for the next four years’. So of course he didn’t ask me to choose, I decided to keep my job.

“I’m glad he didn’t ask me to choose. It would have been a wrench and a bad way of starting love. Love has nothing to do with sacrifice,” she reveals.

In fact, as a singer, Bruni wants to continue “writing new songs, writing songs for other people as much as I can as long as I can until I die. May be when my husband is no longer President of France, I can play live again and be an old lady singing the blues. That would be nice”.

The film will be shown on French television on New Year’s Day and in Britain in late January.

Bruni, whose former high-profile lovers included Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger and Laurent Fabius, the Socialist former French Prime Minister, has spoken about her whirlwind romance with the flamboyant French President whom she met at the home of their friend outside Paris in November 2007.

“There were only eight people and we were seated next to each other and it was instantaneous, immediate I don’t know what he has but he has something very protective that I never found before, may be because I was much more attracted to artists.

“I realised people were shocked when I first started dating, because presidents don’t date and I understand that.

But it’s just another world for me because I come from the modelling and the music — we can date for ever, we don’t have to get married.

“Also it was the first time a president got divorced, usually they don’t get divorced because that’s not good for their position. So I guess Nicolas is having a life like a normal 50-year-old man: He can get divorced and he can get married again,” she says in the film.

The taboo-breaking documentary is also the first to catch Bruni and her husband away from the spotlight — French President bending down to kiss Bruni, who’s sitting on a sofa with a guitar in hand, on the neck. “You smell of cigarettes!” she exclaims with a grin.
