Now, Dubai aims for a km-high tower

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 3:10 am

Even before the formal inauguration of the world’s tallest building Burj Dubai, the city is all set to break its own record, by building a tower with a dizzying height of more than one kilometre.

The new tower with more than 200 floors, would be two to three times size of tallest skyscrapers now dotting skyline of major US cities like New York and Chicago.

It is coming up on the Sea-front in a 270-hectare area, will be the centre-piece of the sprawling waterfront projects in the city and be build in next ten years, announced the Dubai-based developer, Nakheel.

“From our perspective, we’re building a tower over one-kilometre high. It’s the tallest by current comparisons,” Nakheel Chief Executive Chris O’Donnell said, while announcing the project.

The architecture of the new building — Nakheel Harbour and Tower — is based on Islamic design inspired by the gardens of Alhambra in Spain, the harbour of Alexandria in Egypt, the promenade of Tangier in Morocco and the bridges of Esfahan in Iran.

The project will also include world’s first inner city harbour. The tower will be made up of four towers within one single structure and will be surrounded by approximately 40 other towers ranging in height from 20 floors to 90 floors, the company said.

The new development adds to the list of Nakheel’s “earth-shattering projects,” which are adding a combined total of 1,000 kilometres of coastline to Dubai,” O’Donnell said.
