At City Council Monday, the H1N1 virus was briefly addressed by Fairborn City School nurse Norma Nikkola after Mayor Gary Woodward declared Wednesday, May 6, 2009 School Nurses Day in Fairborn.
She discussed how to prevent its spread and how she and the schools’ nursing staff is taking precautions against an outbreak in the schools. So far, no cases have been reported in the Fairborn City School District.
Also at the meeting, council approved new tennis courts and citizens voiced complaints.
Fairborn City Council approved about $45,000 in contracts to renovate the tennis courts and replace the surrounding fence at Wedgewood Park at Monday night’s meeting.
Cracks are visible in the court and, according to Fairborn Parks and Recreation Superintendent Pete Bales, its east-west orientation creates hazardous playing conditions because users must play into the sun.
The fence is also rusty and will need to be replaced when the courts are realigned, Bales added.
Roughly $42,000 for the projects is included in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and the City’s Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan, and the remaining $3,000 is available in the parks and recreation capital fund, Bales said.
During citizens’ comments, Rose Zellmer said that the recent Council/Fairborn City Schools Board of Education’s joint meeting was not catered by a Fairborn business.
“I really think you owe an apology to every food establishment in Fairborn,” Zellmar addressed the council.
According to the receipt, T.G.I.Friday’s in Fairborn catered the meeting, serving roughly 20 people for $390.
“We do have fabulous restaurants in Fairborn,” said Deborah McDonnell, Fairborn’s City Manager, after the meeting, “none of which cater.”
“I do believe in shop local first,” McDonnell added.
She said that, usually, food served at meetings is ordered and picked up by one of her staff from locally-owned establishments but that it could not be arranged for this meeting.
During Council comments, Councilwoman E.J. Griffith addressed Greg Louis of GBR Construction, who was present but had not spoken publicly during the meeting.
As previously reported, Louis commented at Council Monday, April 20 that the city holds inconsistent standards for contractors.
Griffith asked Louis if he was satisfied with the way McDonnell handled his complaints and he answered that he was not.
After the meeting, McDonnell said, “I think that we are working with [Louis] to come up with ideas for customer service and inspections for contractors. I think that we will have a positive result for the taxpayers and for the city.”
She added, “I think that we will have improved customer service but I don’t think that we’ll make everyone happy…[Louis] brings up good points and it’s time to change some things by working together.”
Also, the council appointed new members to the Mayor’s Beautification Committee and the Personnel Advisory Board.
