NY unemployment updates

NY unemployment, New York State’s unemployment rate rose from 7.7% in April to 8.2%, (seasonally adjusted) in May. To give some reference, the January NY unemployment rate was 7.0% and the May 2008 rate was 5.2%. Between November of 2006 and March of 2007, the NY unemployment rate bottomed at 4.3%. Every time the unemployment rate nears 4% it would bottom and head higher.
This begs the question of New York City’s unemployment rate. May 2009 was reported as 9.0% versus 8.0% for April and 8.1% for March and 5.1% for May 2008.

In ranking the 50 largest U.S. cities for the average annual unemployment rate from lowest unemployment to highest, New York city was ranked as follows for each of the listed years:

2008: NYC tied for 17th place with Charlotte, Columbus, Dallas and Denver, all with a 5.5%.
2007: NYC tied for 29th place with Las Vegas and Portland, Or all with a 4.9% rate.
2006: NYC tied for 26th place with Forth Worth and San Jose, CA all with a 5.0% rate.
2005: NYC tied for 27th place with Denver, both with a 5.8% rate.
2004: NYC ranked 28th with a 7.1% rate.
2003: NYC ranked 41st with a 8.3% rate.
2002: NYC ranked 40th with a 8.0% rate.
2001: NYC tied with Philadelphia, both with a 6.1% rate.
2000: NYC ranked 42nd with a 5.8% rate
