Olympic: China Still On Top, Phelps Wins Fifth Gold MedalBEIJING: China has maintained his top position in points table while US swimmer Michael Phelps won the fifth gold medal of Beijing Olympics Wednesday.

Phelps won two more gold medals and look set to fulfill his dream of winning eight gold medals in the Olympics.

He set a world record in 200-meter butterfly in 1 minute 52.03 seconds, and later added another win, in the 800 freestyle relay in 6:58.56 (another world record), to reach five gold medals at these Olympics. Add that to his six from Athens and he hit a historic No. 11, all-time highest for any Olympian.

It was never going to be easy. The route to history and the approach to Mark Spitz’s record seven gold medals in one Olympics took an unexpected twist here at the Water Cube on Wednesday.

US swimmer has added five world records to his name.

Italy’s woman swimmer Federica Pellegrini won gold medal by setting a world record while Australia’s Stephanie Rice set a world record in 200-meter butterfly and secured a gold medal.
