Angelina Jolie might have lost out to Kate Winslet at the 81st Oscars in the best actress category but she was fashion critics’ favourite to top the best dressed list.
Wearing a black Elie Saab gown, Jolie added a splash of colour to the ensemble with emerald drop ear rings and a matching ring. She also trounced current partner Brad Pitt’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston.
Aniston who came wearing a silver Valentino gown will have to take succour in the fact that she at least had the perfect arm candy for the award ceremony, Grammy winning boyfriend John Mayer.
Another actress to follow the sparkle trend was Anne Hathaway who wore a shimmering fish tail Armani gown very similar to the mermaid inspired Dior gown worn by last year’s Best Actress winner Marion Cottilard.
British actress Kate Winslet took home an Oscar in the Best Actress category and was also applauded for her simple fashion choices as she wore a two toned black and blue Yves Saint Laurent gown, standing out with her sculpted hairstyle and minimal jewellery.
Indian actress Freida Pinto added her bit of glamour to the glittery event in her midnight blue John Galliano gown which she paired with vintage jewellery from India. But the fashion camps were divided over whether the dress was a bit too dowdy for the young actress.
“Slumdog Millionaire” co-director Loveleen Tandon kept it simple yet elegant in a red sari, Oscar winner AR Rahman’s wife Sairo Bano attended the ceremony wearing a black churidar suit with golden zari on it.
Mellisa Leo made a bold fashion statement in a dusky gold Reem Acra halter neck, on a red carpet dominated by black and white.
White continued to be a favuorite with the ladies, with many opting for jewelled tones like Jessica Biel and Marissa Tomei.
While Tomei wore a voluminous pleated white Versace gown, Biel kept it simple with her satin dress which sported a popular season trend, a de structured bow.
Taraji P Henson who plays Brad Pitt’s mother in ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ also opted for an off white strapless Roberto Cavalli gown, setting it off with a Fred Leighton necklace and a sleek no fuss hairdo.
The winner in the same category, Penelope Cruz took to the stage wearing a vintage silver gown designed by Pierre Balmain sixty years ago, a break from the black gowns she has
been sporting at the recent award functions.
The stand out stars in the colour brigade, were red and pink with Heidi Klum and Amy Adams both wearing red gowns while Natalie Portman and Alicia keys opted for shades of pink.
While supermodel Klum paired her modern architectural red dress with chunky bracelets, Amy Adams sported a more traditional version with black details.
On-screen fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker did not disappoint the fashion police as she stood out in her pale green Dior gown with a voluminous skirt and jewelled bodice.
The biggest disappointment of the night was Beyonce Knowles, who wore a black gown with swathes of brassy gold flowers which looked as if it was made out out of a velvet curtain.
Nominee Mellisa Leo looked dowdy in a Badgley Mischka gown in a glum shade of brown while last year’s winner French actress Marion Cottilard failed to make a splash in her dark blue and black Dior gown which looked like a mashup of sequins and tiered net.
Queen Latifah seemed to have lost her distinctive taste in fashion as she came wearing a plain royal blue corseted dress which did not do justice to her effervescent personality.
