Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 10:03 pm
In a major ceasefire violation after a gap of few months, Pakistani troops on Saturday (March 21)fired throughout the night at Indian posts in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, leaving a soldier injured. However, Pakistan accused Indian troops of resorting to “unprovoked firing” on the Line of Control and violating a ceasefire.
A defence spokesman said that Pakistani troops fired between 1500 to 2000 rounds at the Indian posts in Kamalkote area of Uri sector between 10pm last night and 3am this morning. Lance Naik Prakash Singh of 10 JAK rifles was injured in the firing.
He said the firing from across the border was unprovoked.
Indian troops returned the fire but used small arms fire, the spokesman said.
India for flat meet
After ceasefire violation by Pakistan, India asked for a flag meet. Sources said that the flag meet has been conveyed over hotline and that Pakistan is yet to respond. India is concerned as 2000 rounds were fired at the Indian forces. This is the first incident of ceasefire violation by Pakistan this year.
Pak accuses Indian troops of ‘unprovoked firing’
Pakistan accused Indian troops of resorting to “unprovoked firing” on the Line of Control and violating a ceasefire prevailing along the frontiers in Jammu and Kashmir.
A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations said that “Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing on the Line of Control in Pando sector near Chakoti, Muzaffarabad last night”.
Military officials said there were no casualties among the Pakistani troops.
A “strong protest has been lodged with Indian authorities for the ceasefire violation”, the ISPR statement said.
India and Pakistan put in place a ceasefire along the frontiers in Jammu and Kashmir in November 2003 and guns have been almost silent since then. However, incidents of firing have occurred along the LoC in the past few months.
Shortly after the Mumbai attacks, Pakistani officials had alleged that Indian troops had opened fire in the Chum sector on the LoC on December 22.
Officials believe that the firing was resorted to by Pakistani troops to provide cover to militants to infiltrate into this side.
Three militants were killed in a fierce gunbattle still going on in Drangyari area in frontier district of
Kupwara. The encounter broke out yesterday.
India has been voicing concern over the ceasefire violation on the border from time to time.
Indian officials have said that the ceasefire has been violated for 58 times since it came into effect in November 2003. There were 34 incidents of ceasefire violation on the LoC last year.
