Pantaloon Femina Miss India Parvathy Omankuttan misses out on the top spot by a whisker, and is adjudged the first runner-up in the Miss World pageant (2008). Omanakuttan just barely missed out on the Miss World title to Miss Russia, with Miss Trinidad and Tobago being declared the second runner-up.

Standing tall at 5 feet 9 inches, 21-year-old Parvathy Omnakuttan, the Miss India World (2008) made it to the top five finalists in the Miss World contest – but eventually, lost out to Miss Russia. Parvathy, who hails from Kerala, had won the Femina Miss India title early this year.

Parvathy reportedly, outwitted her other contestants in the final round of ‘Question-Answer’ session, when she stated that both India and South Africa have produced such world figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela – and that both the nations are inherent in their indigenous rich cultures. Finally, Parvathy thanked Johenssberg for their magnanimous hospitality and warmth.

The Miss World pageant started off on the beat of African drums, with scores of international beauties taking the centre-stage. Beamed live to more than one billion viewers in 187 countries, the women paraded on stage in dresses by South African and Jamaican designers, while African dancers performed.

The show capped a gruelling month for the contestants, who criss-crossed all across the country for galas, rehearsals and even a safari on the tip of the African continent. Dressed in colourful flowing gowns, the contestants were introduced in groups, while dancers entertained the crowd. As all the participants trouped on the stage, the flags of the world were paraded through the audience.

This year, the event included a high-tech twist with an online competition, where viewers voted for their favourite beauty. The winner of the online vote went directly to the semi-final round, where Miss Barbados, Miss Mexico, Miss Russia and Miss Iceland, secured spots by winning special competitions in the run-up to the big show.

An emminent international jury was present to arrive at the penultimate decision, as to find the befitting successor to China’s Zhang Zi Lin, the former Miss World of last year (2007). By hosting the Miss World paegent this year, South Africa nested sincere hopes of the esteemed event helping overcome Johannesburg’s reputation for crime, and boost the city’s chances of getting promoted as a tourist spot.

The competition was originally scheduled for October 4 (2008) in Kiev but got postponed in September itself, over security concerns due to the then ongoing conflict between both its neighbours, Russia and Georgia.
