PCB pins hopes on furture tour by India to recover from crisis

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ejaz Butt had told a Senate Committee hearing that the PCB hoped to recover from a financial crisis as soon as the Indian government allowed its team to play against Pakistan.
India had cancelled its tour of Pakistan scheduled for this month due to political tensions between the two countries but Butt told a Senate Committee hearing this week that he was still hopeful of India sending its team in the near future.
He had told the Senators that it lost an estimated revenue of around USD 40 million due to the Indian team’s cancellation of its tour to Pakistan which was slated to start from January 4 following the Mumbai terror attacks.
The PCB chairman said though Sri Lanka has replaced India as the touring side but their ODI and Test series which is split into two parts will raise just around USD 500,000.
Butt said in the past when the PCB faced a financial crunch the tour by the Indian team to Pakistan in 2004 had helped them recover, and so he is keen for ties to be revived between the two countries even if it is away from home.
“The Sri Lanka series would help us generate just a small amount, but we do hope that the Indian cricket team tours Pakistan in the near future. Pakistan will earn at least USD 25-30 million from playing India at a neutral venue as an alternative,” he said.
In a thinly-veiled attack on earlier PCB administration, Butt said the board was facing a financial crisis as the board’s reserves had been halved over the last two years. Butt said the PCB reserves stood at USD 42 million in October 2006, but when he took over as the chairman in October last year it was just USD 19 million.
The Senate has set another hearing on February 9. and asked former PCB chief Nasim Ashraf, former CEO Shafqat Naghmi and current officials to appear before it.
