Pennsylvania Primary Elect
ion Results 2010: President Obama, Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell and other top Democrats welcomed Specter because it strengthened their party’s majority in the Senate, and they promised to campaign for his reelection. But Sestak still opted for a primary challenge, calling himself the “real” Democrat in the race. In February, Pennsylvania’s Democratic State Committee endorsed Specter over Sestak.
In Pennsylvania during the 2008 campaign, Rasmussen Reports polling showed Obama winning the state by a 52% to 46% margin. Obama won 55% to 44%. Four years earlier, Rasmussen Reports polling showed Kerry leading Bush in Pennsylvania 49% to 47%. Kerry won 51% to 49%.
A closed primary system, coupled with a low voter turnout, brings out the most hyper-partisan members of the Republican and Democratic parties. Little wonder voters in November often say, “I don’t like any of these candidates”. Perhaps they should have participated in the primaries when their opinions statistically mattered the most.
