BEIJING: PM Gilani Urges SCO For Shared Vision on Regional Peace, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Friday urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for the adoption of a shared vision of cooperation between regions to achieve peace and development in the region. “I have no doubt that the collective wisdom and concerted efforts, we can help build a prosperous future,” said the Prime Minister, while compared to the annual meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of SCO.
The summit was attended by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the Secretary-General Bolat Nurgaliev and other heads of government of SCO.
Prime Minister Gilani said challenges including the financial crisis, terrorism and extremism, energy, food, environment and information security must be addressed on priority.
He suggested that the SCO should take the initiative in a high-level strategic dialogue, participation of the spectrum of their organizations and observers, to crystallize a comprehensive and large transnational regional development agenda.
He said that the practical arrangements should be resolved to craft investment instruments for a win-win cooperation projects in the areas of energy and infrastructure.
Gilani proposals for the development of the SCO of the Banking Association and the Business Council to harness the potential of private and corporate sectors of the subsidiaries of the SCO.
He pointed out free trade as the only option to enable regional economies to protect themselves from the vagaries of the financial turmoil.
The Prime Minister urged the SCO member states to grant full membership Pakistan, as it had been on the observer status in the past four years.
He said that Pakistan shares with the SCO and its members, strong economic complementarity and strategic, and expect an early and positive response for membership.
The event was attended by leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan and Russia, who became president of the organization in August. Pakistan, Iran, India and Mongolia attended the summit as observers, while Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, as guests.
Six of the SCO full members, 60 percent of the landmass of Eurasia and their population is one third of the world, while its affiliate SCO accounts for half the human race.
The SCO aims to fight against terrorism, extremism and separatism. Although it focuses mainly on security issues, the organization in recent years expanded its mandate to include cooperation in the economic, humanitarian and technology.
