Just days after the Aussies faced a humiliating defeat at Mohali, skipper Ricky Ponting admits that it is a tough challenge to maintain the number one spot in the rankings.
After being felicitated by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for being the the top one-day side, the Aussie skipper for the first time mentioned that Australia has a tough task to be the best One-day and Test side in world cricket.
He said, “With the new players in the team at the moment, it is a great challenge for the Aussies to maintain their standards. That is what our target is to remain the No. 1 team in both forms of the game. We will give it our best shot to maintain the same.”
He also promised an improved performance in the rest of the series. Ponting admitted India’s emergence as a cricketing powerhouse and said his team was trying to come to terms with the conditions.
“We are trying to come back into the series. We are trying to cope with the conditions in India. Hopefully, we can put up a better show in the next two matches,” Ponting said at a dinner hosted by the Australian High Commission.
Australia, already down 0-1, face India in the third Test at the Feroze Shah Kotla here on October 29 before taking on the hosts in the last Test starting in Nagpur from November 6.
