President Zardari Announces Lifting Governor Rule in Punjab

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has announced to lift the governor rule from Punjab besides announcing support to the candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
Addressing the joint session of the Parliament here Saturday, the President said that PPP will sit in opposition benches in the provincial assembly but will not let the government fall, so that the “doors to horse-trading could be shut forever.”
President proposed the formation of a parliamentary committee for the amendment in the Constitution to implement Charter of Democracy (CoD) and to decide the fate of 58-2(B), urging that the committee should table its proposals without any delay.
Zardari said that the supremacy of the Parliament was the dream of Benazir Bhutto. He congratulated all the parliamentarians to complete their first year successfully, besides greeting newly-elected Senators at the start of his address.
President urged the Parliament to formulate a policy for Balochistan to address its problems and apprehensions. He said that the province should be given autonomy and announced Rs 47 billion package for Balochistan on behalf of federal government.
President hailed the efforts and sacrifices of the armed forces and security personnel in ongoing war against extremism.
The president said that government inherited various problems including the power shortage of more than 3500 MW. He hailed government’s approach with which it is tackling the issue, announcing that work on Thar coal project, setting-up new IPPs and rental power projects will be expedited.
He also praised the role of the press and media in the country, reiterating that government has no intentions to interfere in its affairs. He said that all the stake-holders will be taken on board to form a self-regulatory system, saying that government will also form a journalist victim fund.
Zardari said that 20,000 tractors will be provided to farmers on subsidized rates.
Services chiefs, provincial governors and chief ministers, foreign diplomats, top civil and military officials, chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other senior politicians also attended the joint session of the Parliament.
Earlier, Chairman Senate Farooque H Naek and Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza welcomed President Zardari on his arrival at Parliament House. Ms Mirza, flanked by Naek, ran the proceedings of the session.
The house offered dua for the deceased in yesterday’s Jamrud mosque blast. Parliamentarians belong to Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) staged a token-boycott from the proceedings of the house when they were not allowed to speak on Point of Order.
PML-Q parliamentarians wanted to raise their concerns on what they said horse-trading of their party’s MPAs in Balochistan and Punjab, however, Speaker refused to let them speak on PoD.
