Srinagar, May 27, KONS: Violence broke out in the Kashmir University campus on Tuesday as students protested at being evicted from hostels for security measures for the recent visit of the president of India. Several students were injured in clashes with the police during the protests. The campus had been totally sealed for security reasons two days ago on the visit of the president, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, to inaugurate the Institute of Kashmir Studies during which many other dignitaries were present. Students who reside within the varsity campus told the KNS that they were told to vacate the hostels and forced to leave the university without any prior notice, besides being subjected to various sorts of harassment in the name of security. A large number of students assembled in the university campus today and staged angry demonstrations against the authorities. The students said that they had to face a difficult situation because of the functions and many had to spend the night in hotels after being evicted from hostels. The angry, slogan-shouting crowd of students demanded an investigation into the whole episode. Personnel deputed on university security tried to disperse the protestors, but the latter were not placated. Later the police used tear gas to break up the demonstration, during which two students were reported to have been injured. The station house officer of the Nageen police station told the CNS that the police neither used a lathi charge nor any other means that could have resulted in injuries to the protestors. He said that according to his information, the police on university duty fired just two tear gas shells after which the protestors dispersed. The registrar of the university, Fayyaz Ahmad, said that the reports of students being forcibly evicted from hostels were wrong. “Recently, during the functions, many students left the hostels on their own in view of the security, but no one was forced out,” he said. “The university had already announced a holiday for four days, because of which students had left for home,” he said, adding that talks with agitating students were going on.”We have assured them of an inquiry into any thing untoward that might have happened,’ he said.Later, a delegation of students met the vice chancellor, who assured them of justice if they had been wronged. The protestors dispersed thereafter.
