Qadir named chief selector by PCB

Pakistan Cricket Board today (Nov 20) named former Test leg-spinner Abdul Qadir as national selection committee chairman.

PCB chief Ejaz Butt told reporters in Islamabad that other members of the selection panel will be picked after consultation with Qadir.

This is the first time that Qadir, who played 67 tests and 104 one-day internationals for Pakistan, has been appointed to any position in the board.

He is also the fifth high-profile former player picked by Butt for important assignments after the appointments of Saleem Altaf (chief operating officer), Javed Miandad (director-general), Aamer Sohail (director, national cricket academy) and Wasim Bari (director human resources).

Butt also made it clear that he was a result-oriented person and had already set goals for everyone.

“I don’t believe in just talking. I have already set a target for the first year that our team has to climb into the top three of international rankings in any two modes of the game,” Butt said. “The day we don’t meet our targets I will be the first person to leave. No one will have to ask me to resign,” he added.

Butt insisted that he had embarked on a player-friendly policy but this didn’t mean he would compromise on discipline and performance.

The PCB chief didn’t see any clash of interests between the posts of director-general and chief operating officer. “Look there is too much work for the chief operating officer (Altaf) and we felt Miandad was the best man to come in and look after all cricket related matters in the practical sense of the word. There is no conflict,” he said.
