Reality shows come under govt scanner

The shocking story of reality TV contestant, Shinjini Sengupta, continues to make the headlines almost a week after the teenager suffered a paralytic attack after being publicly rebuked on a Bangla dance show, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Priyaranjan Dasmunsi on Tuesday (July 1) said that he will look into regulating such shows to prevent similar incidents.

I&B minister while talking to reporters in Malda said that he would seek opinion of the channel authorities and sort out how to go about regulating the reality Shows. “I will look into this matter and discuss the situation with those in the industry. This is an incident, which will create repercussions in the minds of the children. There are certain programs and serials which go against certain values of our society. Government cannot directly step into it,” the minister said.

Shinjini is currently being treated at a premier hospital in Bangalore. One of the judges of the show who had graded Shinjini, Ringoo, came to visit her in the hospital to ease the tension. The makers of the reality show, blamed for this young girl’s plight, remain unapologetic, maintaining her condition was not due to their harsh words but Union minister for Women and Child Development, Renuka Chowdhury, tends to disagree.

“So far it’s unregulated market and putting guidelines will facilitate children to get better working conditions, child right and to see that they are not exploited by any of these people,” Renuka said.

Even as the blame game continues between judges and parents, it took the unfortunate incident of Shinjini’s breakdown, for the nation to sit up and take notice of where one should draw the line on reality TV shows, especially those involving children.
