Renault-Bajaj-Nissan’s car plant likely in Pune

Thursday, September 25, 2008 at 5:09 am

The Renault-Nissan-Bajaj joint venture has zeroed in on a Bajaj-owned land in Pune and the alliance was looking at the possibilities of developing it for the proposed ultra low-cost car (ULC) project, a top company official said.

“We are clear about where we are going to be. It is going to be in Pune,” Renault India’s Managing Director, Sylvain Bilaine, told reporters in Mumbai on Wednesday (September 24).

The company was considering using land in Pune belonging to the Bajaj group, Bilaine said, adding that the alliance was exploring possibilities of developing it for the (ULC) project. Bilaine also said that the designing for the ULC would be done at the Renault Designing Centre in India, which was launched in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The initial production capacity of the ultra low cost car would be 4 lakh and the product would be rolled out by 2011, he said. The new high-security design facility by Renault is the first local design operation of a Western auto manufacturer in India.

In June 2008, Bajaj-Renault-Nissan had announced a joint venture for the ULC project with Bajaj holding a 50% stake and Renault and Nissan holding 25% each to produce and market small cars in the country. (PTI)
