Renuka defends RAW officer

Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 5:08 am

After a woman RAW official — Nisha Bhatia — allegedly tried to commit suicide on Tuesday (Aug 19) by consuming poison right outside the Prime Minister’s Office in a dramatic incident that brought the country’s external intelligence agency in public gaze yet again, Women and Child Development Minister — Renuka Chowdhury — spoke in defence of the woman RAW offficer and categorically said that she will personally look into the matter and will ensure that justice would prevail and the guilty would be brought to book.

Condemning the incident, Renuka said:”If Nisha’s charge is true, guilty will have to answer.  It’s regretful that Nisha had to take a desperate step and I will personally look into Nisha’s case.”

In a related development, the government had briefed the media yesterday and said that the RAW lady officer- Nisha Bhatia — was given several opportunities to present her case. A committee, which was appointed to investigate into the issue, found the officer in ‘disturbed state of mind’. It’s also learnt that many complaints have been lodged against the officer in question.

The employee identified as Nisha Bhatia was posted at the training centre of the Research and Analysis Wing(RAW) in Gurgaon and in the past had alleged sexual harrassment by her superiors. Bhatia reached the PMO this afternoon and wanted to meet an official posted there. However, on being denied entry, she allegedly consumed rat poison in front of the office in the high security area on the Raisina hills.

She was immediately rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where the doctors did a stomach wash. Her condition was stated to be out of danger.

Bhatia was in the rank of Director in the RAW and posted in the training division.

The Government has already constituted an inquiry into her complaint of sexual harassment by unnamed supeeriors in the RAW.

A Joint Secretary, who was on deputation to RAW, faced the main allegation of sexual harassment. RAW was in the news for wrong reasons when Rabinder Singh, a Joint Secretary-level officer in RAW, escaped to the US in 2004. Later, several  allegations were levelled by a former official Maj Gen (retd) V K Singh about corruption in the agency.
