Riots break out in Italy

Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at 3:09 am

Several thousand people demonstrating in Naples clashed with riot police. The demonstrators were protesting against the locating of a rubbish dump. Violence errupted at the end of what had been a peaceful demonstration after the police stopped a delegation.

Residents of 10 suburbs are up in arms over government plans to put mountains of rotting, uncollected waste in their neighbourhoods.

More violence was reported in southern Italy over the proposed siting of new, much-needed garbage dumps.

Protesters who don’t want the dumps in their suburb of Naples faced a wall of armed troops and police.

The clashes come amid ongoing tensions over plans to dump mountains of uncollected trash from all over the city in 10 of its suburbs.

All other sites are full.

Riot police charged at the demonstrators who threw stones and flares at them. Five policemen and several protesters were injured.

Landfill sites have been declared ‘military zones’ by the Italian government and put under guard.

If the government has its way, residents say they’ll pay too hign an environmental price for what’s been a chronic problem in Naples.

They want the trash mountains off the streets and put somewhere but not in their back yards.
