San Diego marathon 2009, Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon hits the road again tomorrow. Many roads.
Event organizers are issuing their annual heads-up: With some 20,000 racers expected to pass through the heart of San Diego, getting around town won’t be easy.
The marathon, which begins at 6:30 a.m., will require the partial closure of dozens of streets, including stretches of Morena Boulevard, Park Boulevard, Harbor Drive and North Mission Beach Drive.
Most of the closures will be between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Caltrans will shut down southbound state Route 163, from Interstate 8 to Interstate 5, from 2 a.m. to noon. Several freeway on-ramps and offramps on I-5 and I-8 will also be closed near the race course.
The 26.2-mile course will run through Balboa Park, downtown San Diego, Mission Valley, Bay Park, Old Town and other neighborhoods.
Trolleys and public buses will not operate downtown Sunday morning. The Metropolitan Transit System plans, however, to add early-morning trolley service between Qualcomm Stadium and Washington Street to assist race participants.
