Russia Welcomes Lifting Of Nuclear Trade Embargo On India

MOSCOW:Russia on Monday welcomed a decision by nuclear supplier nations to end a decades-old ban on trade with India, saying it confirmed the country’s ‘faultless non-proliferation record,’ the foreign ministry said.
The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSC), which controls the export and sale of nuclear technology, on Saturday agreed to introduce a waiver for India, ending a 34-year embargo.
“We are convinced that the waiver made for India confirms Delhi’s faultless track record in non-proliferation and serves as a reliable guarantee of the peaceful use of nuclear exports to India,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.
“Russia was one of the initiators of this step. We actively facilitated the passing of this document,” the statement said. Russia in February finalised a deal with New Delhi for Moscow to build four new nuclear power stations in India, but the deal was dependent on the NSC waiver. Moscow is already constructing two 1,000 megawatt light water nuclear power reactors at Kudankulam under the terms of an accord signed in June 1998.
