Russian foreign minister to meet Rice

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will hold talks on Wednesday with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The diplomats will meet on the sidelines of the 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Russian minister is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings, including talks with members of a U.S.  commission on Russia. He will also attend the traditional dinner on behalf of U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. 

On Wednesday, Lavrov will meet former U.S. diplomacy chief Henry Kissenger. He will also hold talks with colleagues from the group of countries – friends of the comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty. 

Traditionally, the talks between Rice and Lavrov will be held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. White House representatives earlier said Lavrov might meet with U.S. President George Bush. It will be the first Russian-U.S. high level meetings after the events in South Ossetia.

In all, the Russian foreign minister is to hold more than 50 meetings and bilateral talks at the UN headquarters, within the framework of the “ministerial week.” 

Earlier, Lavrov stated Russia did not intend to bring up the issue the situation concerning South Ossetia at a meeting of the UNGA. However the subject is certain to be raised.

There has been no provision for a meeting between the Russian delegation and the Georgian side at the UN headquarters. 

Lavrov is to hold talks with the Foreign ministers of the European Union countries in the 1+27 format, of the group of countries, the friends of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization and will attend a ministerial meeting of the UN Security Council.
