Sailors demand action on Stolt Valor

Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 10:10 am

Demanding a status check on the hijacked merchant vessel MT Stolt Valor, 60 Indian sailors have refused to charter the dangerous Somalian waters.

The crew of eight ships have docked at Mumbai and Cochin, refusing to let their vessels move towards the infamous hijack zone – The Gulf of Aden.

The National Union of Seafarers have written to the government asking for the developments they have made in their investigations in the Stolt Valor case, as the seafarers are apprehensive about going to sea; especially to the Somalian coast.

“They have given in writing asking for the state of the Stolt Valor case and they have also asked how safe it is to travel,” said Sunil Nair, spokesperson of the National Union of Seafarers in India.

“It has been a month and seven days…seafarers are very apprehensive because of the delay by the government of India…there is a world wide agitation that has began on the 20th night and seafarers are really apprehensive to travel the coast of Somalia,” Nair added.

The refusal to sail past the Gulf of Aden came after the Japanese owned vessel MT Stolt Valor was hijacked by Somali pirates on October 15.
