Shelling in Somali Capital kills 16

Mogadishu: Shelling in Somali 16 killed, Mortars landed in Somalia’s capital Thursday, killing at least 16 people and wounding more than 25 ambulance service in Mogadishu, he said.

Ali Musa, a spokesman for the ambulance service said the attack began Tuesday morning. Somalia’s capital sees almost daily bloodshed as insurgents seek to topple the government and expel the peacekeepers of the African Union.
Somalia has not had an effective government for 18 years, since warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. The warlords turned on each other, plunging the Horn of Africa nation into chaos and anarchy.
A powerful rebel group with ties to al-Qaida is fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed government. The militant group controls much of southern Somalia.
