Sirajganj Dyke Breached Again in a Week
Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 6:16 pm
The raging Jamuna Friday opened a 500-foot breach along Sirajganj town protection embankment for a second time in a week, causing panic among the townspeople.

Assisted by the local administration, the Water Development Board (WDB) employees and the community members were dumping sand-filled bags in an attempt to repair the gaping dyke that breached at around 2:00pm.
On July 10, the rain-fed river started eating into about 600 feet along the ‘hard point’ zone of the embankment in Shashan Goila Ghat area. Dumping sand bags and concrete blocks authorities repaired it.
The government then formed an investigation committee to look into the reasons for the breach.
Sirajganj WDB Executive Engineer (Operations and Maintenance) Niamul Haq Bhuiyan had said steps were taken to prevent the breach.
The location of the breach was a few kilometres away from the district town, the correspondent of the news agency said.
In 2007, another length of the town protection embankment had caved in, inundating Sirajganj town totally.
