‘SL issue will not affect DMK-Cong ties’

The DMK will continue to exert pressure on the Centre on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue but would not hamper the `smooth’ ties prevailing between the party and Congress, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi said on Saturday (February 28).
“There is no doubt that the DMK will continue to put pressure on the Centre to take up the cause of Tamils living in Sri Lanka… but that will not come in the way of the cordial ties we have with Congress,” she told reporters.
Kanimozhi was here to inaugurate the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Kozhikode unit of the Tamil Sangam.
Claiming that the Tamils in the island nation were not safe, she said even NGOs in Sri Lanka had pointed out to serious human rights violations taking place there. “We want the Centre to take up the issue with the UN and see to that the human rights violations are stopped.”
Stating that the LTTE issue and the matter concerning the plight of Tamils had to be viewed separately, she said “our primary job is to find a solution to the crisis faced by Tamils.”
“Whether the LTTE comes to the negotiating table or not is not the issue now. The DMK Government is more concerned about the safety of Tamils in Sri Lanka,” she said.
