Sopore killings: Case of murder against army

Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 11:02 am

A case of murder has been registered against the army in the Sopore firing incident that killed two youths on Saturday night sparking off violent street protests by residents in this town of North Kashmir.

Police has register a case of murder under section 302 of the IPC against the 22 Rashtriya Rifles. The government has ordered a magistrial inquiry into the case.

Two youths were killed and another was critically injured last night when unidentified gunmen in
combat uniform opened fire on a group of people in Sopore. CRPF personnel opened fire on violent protestors late in the night leaving three persons injured, official sources said.

While locals alleged army personnel moving in a bullet-proof vehicle resorted to firing at a place near a local bus stand without any provocation, the army said militants in combat dress opened fire to escape from security forces.

An Army spokesman told news agencies in Srinagar that army personnel were not present at all at the site of the incident but “we are checking who opened fire at the civilians”. Police said two persons in combat dress opened fire on a group of youths in the main bazar near local bus stand.

The Army on its part has issued a statement claiming that there is a lot of confusion surrounding the incident.  “We are investigating who were the two persons who opened fire,” DIG North Kashmir GM Mir said.

The incident has thrown the Omar Abdullah led J&K government into overdrive, with the newly elected Chief Minister ordering a Magisterial Enquiry into the incident ‘to get to the bottom of the case’. He has also demanded that the findings of the enquiry should be submitted within 15 days.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Amin and Javid Ahmed and the seriously injured youth as Firdous Ahmed.

The local people came out on the streets and staged demonstration and accused the army of opening fire. Baramulla Development Commissioner Vaseem Ahmed Khan has been asked to inquire into the firing incident and submit his report within 15 days, official sources said.
Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the area as a precautionary measure, official sources said.
