Spanish mayor wants to take Pual octopus home

Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 8:15 pm under World News Alerts

Paul, the world’s best known octopus which lives in an aquarium in Germany was declared favourite friend of the Spanish town of Carballino on Thursday during a small ceremony in Oberhausen.
The mayor of Carballino, Carlos Alberto Montes Marques told reporters that the octopus as something to eat was always a symbol of Carballino and what we needed was an octopus with a real name to represent a living symbol and then Paul came along.
The octopus made worldwide headlines during the World Cup when it correctly predicted the outcome of all Germany’s games and then forecast correctly that Spain would beat Netherlands in the final on July11.
Ever since, different zoos have been trying to buy Paul, there were concerns about his security and reporters of a foreign television station wanted Paul to predict a political event for their national audience which the octopus’ owners Sea Life denied.
Paul’s owners also repeatedly made clear that the octopus was not for sale. But mayor Montes was not deterred by his mission to take Paul home one day, dead or alive.
We will continue to try to buy Paul with the help of Pescamar company, not now, but later when he is no longer with us. They are currently building an octopus museum in Carballino. They would like to have Paul, Montes said.
