Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 2:01 am

In a major boost to the Mahinda Rajapaksa government’s military campaign against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Sri Lankan Army on Sunday (January 18) has seized a sophisticated boat manufacturing unit and a highly-fortified camp of the guerrillas in the embattled northern region.

The troops led by Brig Nandana Udawatta entered the South of Puthukkudiyiruppu jungle area in Mullaittivu on Sunday. The security forces captured an LTTE camp and a boat manufacturing factory of the rebels in the Maruthampuvel area, according to the battlefield reports.

“Troops found two fast attack boats, two water jets and seven small boats used for suicide missions inside the facility suspected to be funded by foreign NGOs,” the Defence Ministry said. The security forces, after capturing the LTTE camp following the day-long clashes with the Tiger rebels yesterday, found six overhead bunkers, two permanent buildings and six temporary huts inside the camp.

Meanwhile, the wreckage of a helicopter was also found in the Mullaitivu jungles by troops engaged in clearing operations. It is believed the chopper may have been used by the LTTE for training purposes. The security forces also have six T-56 riffles, two light machine guns (LMG), one RPG launcher, eight claymore mines and four grenades from the north of Muthiyankadu tank area.
