Actor Vinay Pathak’s upcoming film, “Straight – ek tedi meri love story” may be about Pinu who is confused about his sexual orientation, but the actor insists that the film is “not a gay movie.”
“It is not a gay film. It is one-of-a-kind romantic comedy which has never been made in India,” Vinay Pathak said.
The story of the film revolves around Pinu Patel (Vinay Pathak) who is a well-off businessman but is insecure about his sexual orientation because he has never been in a
relationship.
When asked whether he did research for his role or met anyone with such complexes, the versatile actor said, “The script was so fantastically written that I had no need to research about it. Moreover, life experiences helped a lot as I have met people who are homosexuals during my career.”
Interestingly, Pathak’s film comes at a time when Bollywood is waking up to the issues of homosexuals and films like “Fashion” and “Dostana”, are being welcomed by audience
with open arms.
Pathak who is known to be popular with multiplex audience, states that his films are not made for a particular audience. Neither he fancies the idea of the two genres in fimmaking like commercial cinema and art cinema.
“I understand that it is just media-made concept. With the success of films like ‘Bheja Fry’, ‘Khosla ka Ghosla’ and ‘Johnny Gaddar’, filmmakers are beginning to realise that simple short stories can also be made into a commercially viable projects,” he said.
His performance in Shahrukh starrer “Rab ne bana di Jodi” got nominated for best supporting role in Filmfare.
“It has always been the interesting scripts which has been the reason for choosing a film and not a big-banner or a chance to work with a superstar,” he said.
“It is an added happiness if you get an award. It can be another way of celebrating your work but I never had sleepless nights over it,” Pathak said.
Recalling the character in RNBDJ, he said, “I am happy that Adi (Aditya Chopra) convinced me to do it as he insisted that it was solely written for me.”
His next film “Straight” directed by Parvati Balagopalan also stars Gul Panag in the main lead.
When asked whether the actors like him were hit by the ongoing recession in the film industry, Pathak candidly said, “Mere pass bahut kaam hai. (My hands are full with films).”
The actor seems to be true to his words as the audience would see him all the year with movies like SRK, Pappu can’t dance sala, Raat gayi baat gayi and the list goes on.
