The nationwide strike by the Left affiliated trade unions and the Airport Authority of India today (August 20) left air travellers across the country in the loom, Kolkata being the worst affected. The strike today has brought the Left-ruled West Bengal to a standstill, disrupting both air and rail traffic. The industrial strike had it maximum impact on the Kolkata airport which would have otherwise been bustling with activity.
Through out wedneday, the Kolkata airport looked deserted, just a few stranded passengers sitting here and there. The main display board too was switched off and cancellation of all the flights, inconvenienced the travel plans of thousands of passengers.
Almost all flights had been cancelled and train services too was disrupted following protesters squatting on the rail track at several places. Additional policemen and Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed in the city to maintain law and order. Airport sources said more than a hundred passengers who came late night yesterday were stranded.
In Chennai, the nation-wide general strike called by central trade unions affected traffic in parts of the city with activists blocking the roads. However, the response to the strike was minimal with all public transport services operating as usual. Nonetheless, four flights to Kolkata were cancelled today morning following reports of the total strike in the West Bengal. All other morning flights operated as scheduled. Police warned of stern action against anyone attempting to disrupt normal life in the state.
In other parts of the country the situation was mixed. Rail traffic at Patna was also crippled after protesters laid seige to rail tracks. In Kerala, the trade union’s strike literally turned into a bandh. Shops and establishments had downed shutters and the state was brought to a grinding halt.
