COLOMBO: Four people were killed before dawn on Tuesday when Tamil Tigers attacked a breakaway rebel faction working closely with the government in Sri Lanka’s east, a pro-rebel website said.
The Tigers also captured six fighters belonging to the TMVP group when they raided the camp.
The TMVP, led by Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, also known as Colonel Karuna, split from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2004.
Karuna then reportedly colluded with Sri Lanka’s armed forces to drive the LTTE out from the eastern town of Batticaloa, one of the biggest government successes of 2007.
There was no immediate comment from Sri Lanka’s defence ministry.
The LTTE have been fighting for a separate homeland for minority Tamils since 1972.
