TCP To Give 50,000 Tons Of Wheat For WFPKARACHI:The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) will provide 50,000 tonnes imported wheat for the World Food Programme and some 33,000 tonnes to armed forces following the directives of Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal), sources told Business Recorder on Friday.

They said TCP has been directed by the ministry for speedy supply of imported wheat across the country including AJK and to Utility Stores Corporation to overcome the commodity shortfall. Sources said that the TCP is importing 2.5 million tonnes of wheat including 1.7 million tonnes of red wheat and 0.8 million tonnes white wheat following the federal government decision to bridge the demand and supply gap.

TCP has finalised contracts for the import of 1.726 million tonnes of red wheat, while remaining quantity of white wheat will be imported under the deferred payment from US, whose approval has already been made by the US authorities.

Sources said that ministry of food has allocated 1.303 million tonnes of imported wheat to the four provinces, Utility Stores Corporations, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, armed forces and world food programme. The chairman TCP Muhammad Saeed also has directed the corporation officials to make sure timely delivery of imported wheat to the concerned authorities while about 396,447 tonnes of the commodity has already been dispatched to the provinces and other departments as per allocation.

They said that Minfal has instructed TCP to provide some 50,000 tonnes of imported wheat for the ongoing United Nations (UN) world food programme on barter system. The UN will provide the same volume of wheat to Pakistan during the next few months.

The ministry has also instructed the corporation to supply a quantity of some 33,756 tonnes of wheat to armed forces comprising Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy and Pak Airforce, they added.

TCP will provide a quantity of 15,094 tonnes imported wheat to Pakistan Army, some 8,662 tonnes to Pakistan Navy and 10,000 tonnes to Pakistan Airforce, of which some 4,906 tonnes has already been dispatched to Pakistan Army and about 1,378 tonnes to Pakistan Navy. The ministry of food has allocated a quota of 465,582 tonnes of imported wheat for Punjab, of which 14,418 tonnes has been delivered, while Sindh has been allocated a quota of 252,700 tonnes and some 127,299 tonnes has been dispatched to it.

Sources said that till date 19 vessels carrying 751,897 metric tonnes imported wheat have arrived at Port Qasim and 430,826 tonnes of wheat has been discharged. While, some 16 vessels carrying 652,500 tonnes of wheat are expected to arrive in October and 2 vessels with 90,000 tonnes red wheat would arrive in November this year.
