Srinagar, May 06, KONS: Congress MP, Madan Lal Sharma, who stirred up a political storm here by naming the prime minister and Sonia Gandhi in connection with a cover up of the sex scandal, has found a handy scapegoat in the media, accusing it of distorting his comments. Within hours of being summoned by the Congress high command, Sharma told pressmen in Jammu that he would not have dared to name Ghulam Nabi Azad or Sonia Gandhi in connection with the issue. Though Sharma admitted having referred to the former state Congress chief, Peerzada Muhammad Sayeed, he said that naming the assembly speaker, Tara Chand, could have been a “slip of the tongue.”?But I never mentioned Ghulam Nabi Azad or Sonia Gandhi,” he said. He asserted that he remembered the words he had spoken, and the media had misrepresented his remarks. Sharma’s “denial” comes even as local TV channels aired extensive footage of his speech at a rally where he is supposed to have made comments involving Sonia Gandhi and the state chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad.During the opening of the civil secretariat in Srinagar on Monday, the chief minister had declined to comment on Sharma’s allegations, but the PDP had demanded an explanation from the government, with party president, Mehbooba Mufti, terming it a serious issue as the allegations had been leveled by a member of the parliament. The government too had come out with a statement on Monday evening seeking to deny the allegations, but only added to the confusion by asserting that Sharma had not petitioned the prime minister or the Congress president to save the skin of senior party men.
