NEW DELHI: Australia paceman Mitchell Johnson removed Sachin Tendulkar for 68 to leave India on 158 for three at tea on the first day of the third test on Wednesday.
Tendulkar edged left-arm Johnson to give wicketkeeper Brad Haddin a low catch in the final over before tea, giving the bowler his second wicket.
Left-handed opener Gautam Gambhir was unbeaten on 67 with Vangipurappu Laxman on one at the interval.
Tendulkar struck his 51st test half-century and raised a 130-run third wicket partnership with the in-form Gambhir, who dug in on one end to follow up on his 104 in the second test. The batsmen revived the innings after Australian pacemen Brett Lee and Johnson had removed Virender Sehwag (1) and Rahul Dravid (11) in the morning to make it 27 for two.
India won the second test in Mohali by a record 320 runs to go 1-0 up in the four-match series.
The hosts added 91 runs after resuming on their lunch score of 67 for two on a good Ferozshah Kotla pitch, which is expected to deteriorate and help spinners later.
Tendulkar played classy shots and guided along the younger Gambhir, who was frustrated on his home ground by Australia’s tight bowling and fielding either side of lunch.
