BANGKOK: Protesters attacked a car carrying Prime MinisterAbhisit Vejjajiva Tuesday, shattering windows but leaving the Thai leader unhurt.
The attack escalated tensions a day before a massive anti-government rally that Abhisit said has sparked concerns of“civil war” in Thailand.
The attack marked the first outbreak of violence in Thailand’s latest round of political turmoil.
Some of the vehicle’s windows were smashed when about two dozen protesters converged on Abhisit’s motorcade as it left a hotel in Pattaya, about 90 miles (150 kilometers) south of Bangkok, said government spokesman Isara Suntornwat. Abhisit told reporters after returning to Bangkok, “I did not panic. I can still work normally. Anti-government protesters have called for tens of thousands of supporters nationwide to rally Wednesday in Bangkok.
