‘This could’ve happened to anybody’

Is American executive Kenneth Haywood a victim of terror hacking? That’s the question even cyber experts and the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) are investigating even as Haywood maintains that he is innocent and has nothing to do with the terror e-mail sent just minutes before the Ahmedabad serial blasts.
On 26th July, hours after terror struck Ahmedabad, the ATS tracked down the terror e-mail sent before the serial blasts to a building in Navi Mumbai, and to the IP address of American executive Kenneth Haywood.
Haywood reacting to hacking said, “Some one phoned from Delhi and asked me whether I have a cybercafe. And, then they asked me about the blasts in Bangalore. I said I knew about the blasts in Bangalore. Then, they asked me about blasts in another city. I said I didn’t know about those, and went back to sleep. An hour later, ATS came to my house and told me that it was my IP.”
Haywood who was questioned by the ATS for several hours mainatins he is innocent. The ATS suspects that the terrorists who sent the e-mail would have hacked into Haywood’s wi-fi connection as it did not have a fire-wall making it an easy target.
Kenneth speaking on his IP address being involved, said, “The ATS after interrogating me said that they didn’t find my role. They are on the look out for the person who hacked into my Wi-Fi connection. Honestly, this could have happened to anybody. It is sad that it happened to me.”
It did not take cyber experts too long to track the IP address of the terror mail. But if Haywood maintains he did not send the e-mail, then who did? That’s what cyber experts and the ATS are trying to figure out?
Sunny Waghela, Cyber expert who tracked the IP address, said, “Actually the hackers didn’t enter the house. There was Wi-Fi router which was unsecured. And, the range of Wi-Fi router is 100 metres. The person might have accessed from the 14th or the 16th floor. (Haywood’s flat is on the 15th floor). The hacker opened his laptop, created the yahoo id (Alarabi_gujarat@yahoo.com) before 20 minutes of blast in Ahmedabad.
And while the cyber expetrs are at it, and even as the the ATS is keeping a close watch on Haywood, the fact remains that it is rather easy to crack into wi-fi networks and send fake e-mails.
