US envoy meets Zardari on Mumbai terror attack

Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 2:01 am

Amid intense global pressure on Pakistan to act against the perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage, the US today (Jan 2, 2009) underlined the need for New Delhi and Islamabad to defuse tension in the region.

US ambassador Anne Patterson, who met President Asif Ali Zardari today, said that her country was in constant contact with the Indian and the Pakistani leadership and it supported dialogue process so that the tension between the two South Asian neighbours could be diffused.

Zardari said Pakistan will give a positive response if India shows flexibility in addressing the tensions that have  arisen between the two countries in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks.

There was no official word on the meeting though media reports said they had discussed the efforts to defuse regional tensions.

The President appreciated the role played by the US and other countries to defuse tensions in the region.

The meeting came after US President George W Bush on Sunday spoke to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Zardari and all the three leaders agreed to avoid any action that would “raise tensions” in the region.

Zardari told Patterson that Pakistan would extend “full cooperation” to India if it shows flexibility in
addressing the current situation.

They also discussed bilateral ties and the war against terror. Zardari said the US should extend cooperation to Pakistan in the energy sector.
