US knew NSG meet would fail: Bardhan

Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 5:08 am

The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday (August 25) held the United States responsible for failure of parleys at the recent NSG meeting in Vienna, adding that “small countries raising objections at the meet could not have been without the knowledge of the US.”

“Small countries raised objections to the Indo-US N-deal and it was not without the knowledge of the US,” CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said. “Most of the objections were raised on the clauses of Hyde Act like continuous fuel supply to India. As a result, India won’t get a clean and unconditional waiver which the government has been claiming so far,” he said.

Bardhan criticised the UPA government for having “more trust” in the US government. “The UPA government that the US will use its clout to get a clean waiver but this has not happened at Vienna,” he said.

The CPI leader expressed fear that the US would force India to accept amendments suggested at the NSG meet. The government moved ahead with the nuclear deal without keeping any option open, adding that the Left parties will continue to oppose the government on the deal.

Bardhan said the ongoing agitation launched by the Left against the deal was in its third phase. The first was opposing the deal, the second was withdrawal of support to the UPA government, he added. “We are also agitating on issues like inflation, agrarian crisis and against communal forces,” he said.
