US media: Biden is Obama’s running mate

Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 2:08 am

US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has chosen his Senate colleague, Joseph Biden, as his vice presidential running mate, CNN television reported today (August 23). The network cited unnamed Democratic Party sources, but did not offer any details.

Earlier, ABC News said a detail of Secret Service agents had been sent to assume Biden’s protection in preparation for his possible new role as an official candidate for high office.

Biden, 65, emerged on top after Obama, according to unidentified sources, broke the news to two other contenders — Indiana Senator Evan Bayh and Virginia Governor Tim Kaine — that they were no longer under consideration.

There has been a buzz surrounding the choice for vice-president for a long time now. However, after the Democratic senator returned from his two-day trip to Georgia, talks over his running-mate choice intensified. On the campaign stump this week, Obama has singled out Biden for praise over his response to the crisis in Georgia and proposals to extend more US economic aid to Afghanistan.

Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, would bring decades of national security experience on board, having first been elected to Congress at the age of 29 in 1972.

Biden, a former White House hopeful, had abandoned his campaign after a poor show in Iowa. He had also ran for the 1988 Democratic Presidential nomination, but had opted out of the campaign then due to charges of plagiarism in a stump speech.

Biden is currently serving out his sixth term, making him Delaware’s longest-serving senator. Biden is slated to make his first big speech as the VP candidate on Wednesday (August 27) at the third night of the Democratic convention.

New York Senator Hillary Clinton was speculated to be Obama’s running mate. However, American media reports confirmed that the former First Lady will not be his vice-presidential pick.

Other big names  in the running included retired Gen. Wesley Clark, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, former Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia, Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
