Vietnam has asked local authorities to tighten controls on imported milk and suspend the sale of products of unknown origin amid China’s tainted milk scandal, an official and press reports said today.
The state-run Vietnam news agency said the health ministry sent an urgent message to provinces and cities to suspend the circulation of milk products and products of unidentified origins.
It said the ministry directed local authorities to conduct melamine tests and “inspect the sources of supply of all milk products and materials in the market, especially those imported from China.”
The food safety control centre at the health ministry has already started testing samples, with only negative results so far, said its director Le Thi Hong Hao.
The official said most of the milk from China had been imported in southern Ho Chi Minh-City, the former Saigon. Melamine, which is usually used in making plastics, was found to have been added to milk formula in China, sickening close to 53,000 infants, authorities there have said.
Melamine can make products appear full of protein but it can be fatal if consumed in large amounts. Four children in China have died.
