Virender Sehwag Hits Record One-Day International Score

It took nearly 40 years for a batsman to score the first double-century in one-day international cricket. India opener Virender Sehwag has hit the record one-day international score after smashing 219 from 149 balls against West Indies in Indore.

Sehwag raced to his maiden double century in just 140 balls which included six huge sixes and 23 boundaries. Sehwag also registered the highest individual score in the 50-over format on Thursday, blasting 219 in the fourth one-day international against West Indies at Indore.

The 33 year old joined compatriot Sachin Tendulkar as the only batsmen to hit double-centuries in the 50-over format as he moved past 200 in the 44th over of India’s innings at the Holkar stadium in Indore.

This is also the fastest double century in One-Dayers. Tendulkar was the first batsman to get to a double hundred in ODIs, when he smashed 200 not out from 147 balls against South Africa in Gwalior in February last year. Sehwag’s record-breaking performance led India to 418 for 5, their highest ODI total, and all but ensured India would extend their 2-1 lead and win the series against West Indies.

Sehwag, captaining the side with Mahendra Dhoni rested, said: “I think everyone was expecting me to get 200 but I was not expecting it. It was a true batting wicket, and when I was hitting the ball into the gaps, it was going for four.” Sehwag also holds the record for the highest score by an Indian in Test cricket.

He made 319 against South Africa in Chennai in March 2008, while also scoring 309 against Pakistan in Multan in March 2004 for India’s first triple century in Tests. Sachin Tendulkar was the first to reach the milestone when he scored unbeaten 200 against South Africa in Gwalior on February 24, 2010.
