Weylandt Wins 17th Stage Vuelta Cycling

VALLADOLID, Spain:Belgium’s Wouter Weylandt of Quick Step won the 17th stage of the Tour of Spain, held over 148.2 kilometres (92 miles) between Zamora and here on Wednesday.
Spain’s 2007 Tour de France and 2008 Tour of Italy champion Alberto Contador remained the overall leader for the fifth consecutive day.
Weylandt, who turns 24 next month, beat home Denmark’s Matti Breschel while Belarus’ Alexandre Usov was third, finishing the stage in 3hr 18min 48sec.
It was the first major win of his cycling career and the second consecutive win for Quick Step after Tom Boonen won Wednesday’s stage.
The race continues on Thursday with a 167.4 kilometre ride between Valladolid and Las Rozas. It ends on Sunday in Madrid.
If Contador – the 2007 Tour de France winner and reigning Giro d’Italia champion – wins the Vuelta he will become the first rider since Frenchman Bernard Hinault, over two decades ago, to win all three major Tours.
