Who in Pakistan should India believe?

Even as Pakistan began its probe into the 26/11 dossier evidence presented by India, discordant voices emerged from within the Pakistan government.
Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and the man touted to be Zardari’s mouthpiece, Interior Minister Rehman Mallik’s statements have been at best tangential.
While Rehman Malik has been toeing an placatory line promising action, Gilani has been continuing on an aggressive tone, seeking India to act on the proof given by Pakistan, before asking for action.
Pakistan has brushed aside Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s comments asking it to prevent terrorist attacks like the Mumbai incident, saying India should respond positively to its proposals for pragmatic engagement to counter terrorism.
Gilani said this in response to Singh’s statements made during a speech in India. Gilani said, “Instead of placing the onus for India’s security on Pakistan, we expect the Indian government to respond positively to our proposals for pragmatic and constructive engagement on countering terrorism. We have on our own initiated a series of actions. These have been shared with India through diplomatic channels.”
Islamabad has called for a joint probe into the Mumbai attacks, which New Delhi has blamed on Pakistan-based elements, including the Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group.
Giving a stern warning to Pakistan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday had said he expects Islamabad to take quick and effective action against the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the prime accused in the Mumbai terror attacks on November 26. Singh had also called on Pakistan to close all terror camps in the country. (Read more)
